What I Learned From My Grandmother

Mary Etta Gentry

Grandparents are a gift from the Lord!  Grandmothers are source of blessings and so much knowledge.  As a child, teen and even young adult we tend to listen to our Grandmother when our parents advice seems too much.  I want to shared just a bit of what I learned from my grandmother.  At 100 years old she has taught me much!

On October 6 2015, my Grandmother, Mary Etta Gentry turned 100 years old.  I feel extremely blessed to have her as my grandmother and in my life for so long.  Our family had planned for months to have a reception the weekend before her birthday.  You see Mary Etta has had a large impact on the community, the church as well as her family.  We wanted to have a public gathering to celebrate her.  We all prepared in different ways.  The event went very well.  But I did not get to help as much as I would have liked.  You see I had been sick all that week.  My head was fuzzy and I didn’t get to write much out.

One of the many things Mary Etta has taught me was to ponder things.  So I sat down and pondered about all the things she has taught me.  I prayed, another thing she has greatly inspired me in.  I felt that for all she has done for me I wanted to do more and share more.

I set some goals for myself this year and sharing was part of that.  I’ve become more active in sharing my writing and sharing with my voice.  I’ve become part of a podcast network called Golden Spiral Media as a podcast co-host.  I also am a part of the community centered around one of their podcasts called Stuff I Learned Yesterday a.k.a. SILY.  The Facebook group and the podcast give people opportunities to share things they have learned and how they have grown.  I felt the call to share more about what my Grandmother Mary Etta has taught me and how much she means to me.  So I sat down and recorded it for the SILY podcast.  So I ask you take 15 minuets out of your day, hey you’ve invested a bit to read this so that won’t be too much more to ask 🙂 , and listen to the episode.  It is introduced and closed out by Darrell Darnell founder of the network and it was released 10/30/2015.  Scroll down after the episode and let me close things out.

Thank’s for taking the time to read and to listen.  I don’t know what your relationship is like with your grandparents.  But I would encourage you to take the time to spend time with them.  No one is guaranteed another day, so learn from them and be with them all you can.  Your life will be so much more rich because of it.  In relationships love is spelled T-I-M-E, so love your grandparents by spending the time with them and just listen, or even better take notes.  It will surprise you what you can learn from them. Thank you Mary Etta for teaching me so much and continuing to teach me!
