Happy 10th to Band of Brothers

I highly respect the men and women of the WWII generation (my grandparents generation).  I also have a love for the history and films and shows set in that era.  So when I heard about Band of Brothers, I watched it from the beginning.  It was appointment TV for me that does not happen for me much (LOST would be the only more recent exception).  These were the days before big TV based internet communities, before Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr.  So I talked with a few friends about it, but not to the degree I would like to have done.  But the series came at the right time.

We got to see a human face of the WWII story, it prompted us to ask people who lived in that era about their lives, we learned about history, and it inspired many to join the Armed Services.  It sparked a pain in my life.  My granddad Allred served in WWII (Army in the ETO).  I had heard some of his war stories, but never captured them on tape or wrote them down.  He passed while I was in college and I would have loved the opportunity to talk with him.

The series also came at the right time for the county.  The series started just prior to 9/11.  I think between the events surrounding 9/11 and the U.S. watching what happened during WWII, we woke up to a bigger world.  Most of the U.S. citizens (out side people with direct ties to other countries because of family or because of involvement in missions) were too focused on their own lives and the things around them.  These events helped to wake us up and help us to reach out.  So Band of Brothers was a blessing.

I bought the nice tin packaged DVD series as soon as it came out.  I also bought the beautiful score by Michael Kamen.  It was well composed and gave gravity, poise, and emotion to the scenes.  I even got the soundtrack used in play productions.  Even though I owned the series, I still watched it (and do to this day) on TV any time it was on.  I appreciate it so much I just bought it on Blu-ray and will pass on my original set to my parents.  It was and is well worth the money.

I followed the actors from the series as well.  I did so out of the respect and honor they paid to the men they portrayed.  Damian Lewis is one I follow most closely.  I have watch other films and shows he has been on (like Life which NBC should have never cancelled or at least given it to USA) and will hate I will not get to see his new series Homeland (don’t have Showtime).  His acting was great and he had a great relationship with Maj. Winters that showed in the season.

So I would like to thank everyone involved in any way with Band of Brothers.  You did an excellent job and gave voice to a generation.

(GO OUT AND BUY THE SERIES AND THE SOUNDTRACK!)
