Day 3 – Latrines, Conference Day 1 & a Tired Team

Getting closer to the right depth

We divided our team of 20 into three teams.

Our team heads to work

Each team had a leader or leaders who had done this before.  Plus we had the help of staff members and workers from the mission.  Each team dug a 5’x 5’ x 5’ hole.  One of the teams broke the record for fastest dig (set by Antioch last year).  The team I was a part of had a difficult dig.

Clearing out the dirt

Thankfully we did not have rock (like 2 of the holes last year) but just very compacted soil.  We all had to adjust our work to the heat.  But we were blessed to work with the family of the home as well as play with the babies.  We got to lunch late because of the dig.  After lunch and a well needed siesta (I’m all for the U.S. adopting this policy!), we headed back.

We set up the forms & rebar and then made the concrete.  We poured the lids for the top of the latrine.  They have to dry over several days.  Then we mixed mortar as the walls of the latrine were put up.  It was a long task and our group got in to supper very late.  We were so exhausted we didn’t even go to the conference.

Mark Fox (pastor and one of the elders of Antioch) spoke about man’s relationship with God and Karen translated.  Mark had worked hard and with Karen’s help translated all the Keynote slides into Spanish.  There was a good turnout and questions.

It was a very full day and a blessed one.  Each of us had little trouble falling asleep.
